On the summer solstice this year, I strapped on my pack and climbed more than 4000 vertical feet to a rocky peak in Montana's Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. I had wanted to make this journey for more than year, and while the views didn't disappoint, the trek was brutal. For more than a mile, I climbed nearly straight up through a jungle of burned timber lying like shattered matchsticks, and head-high new growth nearly as dense as a rainforest.
In the end, it was all worth it as the sky put on one of the most dramatic displays of airglow I've ever seen, and the night was calm and perfectly clear. The Milky Way always looks more beautiful to me when seen from the most remote country in Montana.
