Bull bison are the largest land mammal in North America, weighing up to a solid ton. They're all big, but when you see an exceptionally large one you get a true sense of just how massive these animals are. Here, on Soda Butte Creek in Yellowstone National Park on a morning when the temperature struggled to reach twenty below, a gigantic bull awaits the sun near a backdrop of frost-clad willows. Supremely equipped to handle this weather, he has changed very little in the past ten thousand years.
