Intense airglow, the Milky Way, the lights of Billings, Montana, and the orange luminance of the coming moon make for a night sky full of otherworldly color. A tiny two-track road, wet from afternoon thunderstorms, reflects a sheen of green while a windmill anchors a foreground so familiar to anyone who knows the Plains.
A family of coyotes howled in the west, a short-eared owl did its best to photobomb me, and a curious skunk shuffled through the middle of this scene on the first shoot. All around there was wildlife, while above the vastness of our universe stretched out beyond my imagination. These solitary nights that I spend capturing the bond between the terrestrial and celestial are some of my favorite moments as a photographer.
