The original revenant, American bison literally came back from the dead. Hunted to the brink of extinction, a remnant herd located in present-day Yellowstone National Park was discovered after many believed this iconic Western animal had been completely erased from the Plains. Through conservation - and luck - the bison has made a come back with herds once again roaming across portions of their native lands.
Largely unchanged since the last Ice Age, they face winter with determination, remaining in deep snow that they plow from the grass by swinging their enormous heads low to the ground. This bull, standing with a background lost entirely to clean, bright snow, epitomizes the indomitable spirit of a great animal.
