On a clear, June night, the Milky Way mimics the gentle curve of Skyline Arch in Utah's Arches National Park. To get enough light on this sandstone foreground, I used a technique called "light painting," illuminating this arch briefly with artificial light. I don't normally do this, preferring instead to wait for the moon to rise, but with a forecast calling for wildfire smoke drifting up from Arizona I didn't have time to waste.

The desert is entirely unlike anything I experience in Montana, though there was a familiarity to the night sky, reenforcing my belief that through it we share a common connectivity not just with each other but with all who have stared up into the heavens before us.
