When I was a boy, there were hundreds of small, family dairy farms in Northern Vermont. The landscape was one broken by pastures, hay meadows, and myriad barns, always set close to the road. By the time I moved to Montana in the mid 90s, most of these farms had gone under, and a forest ever eager to reclaim fallow land was encroaching from all sides. Here, in this autumn photo, a cow pasture sits in between the time when Holsteins grazed it and a future of hardwoods. With brilliant, unedited color under the quintessential fall sky, it's a scene from the top of Lowell Mountain looking west toward Jay Peak.

This is available in two sizes, on the world's finest ready-to-hang aluminum. Each one is signed and dated and ship free to the lower 48. One print is offered at each size.
