A dramatic sky, featuring beams of sunlight spreading across much of the horizon, fills this morning scene at Mallard's Rest on the Yellowstone River in Southwest Montana. With the Absaroka Beartooth Mountains rising in the background, patches of sun lighting bare cottonwood trees, and striking plays of shadow along the river, this was a moment that I wanted to capture in black and white, a tribute to these prevalent shades during Montana's winter.
I spent over three hours on location the day I took this photograph, waiting... hoping... for the type of sky shown here. It's been a mild winter this year, and the combination of wind, clouds, and sun that often parallel these warmer years make for spectacular shows above.
This is available as a photographic print, and also on ready-to-hang raw aluminum, a stunning way to display a high-contrast black and white piece of art. Each piece is limited to a run of 50 and is signed and numbered by the artist.
