Horses gather below Sphinx Mountain in Montana's Madison River Valley on a windy, winter day. Like the elk that migrate by the hundreds to this valley, these horses are able to find enough to eat during the harsh, winter months because the wind blows the snow off the grasses they feed on.
This photograph has a true fine art feel, done perfectly in black and white on a day of wonderful cloud movement and patchy sunlight. The combination of the near and far draws your eye from the herd of horses up to the rocky peak of the Sphinx and on into the heavens above.
