The Dustbowl took its toll on prairie homesteads, leaving families struggling to survive without the soil necessary to grow crops. Many simply walked away from their homes, sometimes with only what they could carry.
All across the plains, scenes like this are familiar. Sometimes when I photograph these old houses, I think that I can hear children playing in the yard or the clink of dishes in the sink.
Each year there are fewer of these buildings standings. This particular one collapsed during heavy snows in 2018.
