A great horned owl fights to stay awake during the middle of the morning in Montana. Perched in a winter maple tree, he had drawn the attention of a flock of crows, adversaries which, during the day and with numbers on their side, hold the upper hand. Distracted by the crows, he let me get closer than normal, and I was able to capture some of the intricate feather detail of his face and eyes.
Great horned owls are fierce hunters, and their recorded list of prey spans everything from fox pups to swans and even eagles. Eventually, during a lull in the harassment, he flew into a thick spruce where he was better hidden, a secure roost to catch up on his shut eye.
