The late-August Milky Way streams into the sky over Lone Peak in Big Sky, Montana. One this night, I hiked the Beehive Basin trail, famous for its wildflowers and scenic alpine views. Where there was water, there were still asters blooming and tired bumble bees crawling over them, but much of the land had assumed its earthy shades of autumn.
I sat in this rockslide waiting for darkness, listening to the calls of pika, thinking about how fast time seems to move. My excursions in early March to capture our galaxy in the moments before dawn when it lies low along the horizon seemed mere moments earlier. Somehow seasons had progressed impossibly fast.
