Farewell The Night

The summer full moon sinks toward the horizon in Montana's Gravelly Mountains, bidding farewell to a foreground full of lupines and paintbrush.

I shot this horizon-to-horizon panorama at 80mm, focus stacking each panel, then stitching 15 portrait-oriented images into the expansive photograph you see here. It was a technically-challenging project, one that had to be done in a hurry because the level of light changes so rapidly at daybreak and the moon falls so quickly.

Sometimes being a nature photographer precludes enjoying scenes such as this one in the moment because I'm so occupied trying to capture what I'm observing with my camera. I enjoy looking at this photograph now, getting a perspective of what things were like that morning when I was bent over my camera instead of marveling at the view.

This is offered in two sizes, both available as straight photographic prints on archival paper and also on the world's finest aluminum for a ready-to-hang frameless look. The mock-up shows the image at its larger, 20x52 size on aluminum.
