The mid-summer Milky Way arcs over one of my favorite places in Montana, Beehive Basin. Here, high in the Spanish Peaks Wilderness, I spent most of a clear, August night watching a partial moon set, our amazing galaxy stream through the heavens overhead, listening to coyotes and owls serenade the night, and thinking that this has to be one of the loveliest places on Earth.
This photo combines 59 individual shots, all taken from the exact same place, with moonlight on the foreground. Nothing is superimposed, "drawn" in, or altered in its position. It's taken me nearly six months to complete the editing of this project, but I believe that it was time well spent.
Every nature photographer hopes that they will eventually capture a scene that comes close to doing justice to the beauty that they see in the world. When I look at this, thinking back to the night that I took it, I think, "Yes, that's what I saw."
