Castle Valley, near Moab, Utah, glows in shades of its classic red-dirt sandstone and early-summer green under the June Milky Way. These pillars of rock push into the night sky, reaching for the heavens as they continue to defy erosion.
I spent several hours in the middle of the night here, listening to the Colorado River moving behind me, watching a curious kangaroo rat inspect my tripod, and thinking that for thousands of years people have looked up into this same sky with many of the same questions that I have about it.
