Surveilling Winter

An ermine, a weasel that turns from brown to white in the winter, peeks from the snow in Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley. These solitary animals blend in so perfectly with their surroundings that I rarely see them. While they weigh only a few ounces, they are ferocious hunters, capable of killing cottontail rabbits. Agile, curious, and with a bounding gate that carries them across even loose snow, they're one of my favorite small mammals.

This is a great capture with balance, detail, and a scene that truly does this remarkable animal justice. It's available as both a photographic print and aluminum art.
