A nearly-full winter moon settles behind the western horizon at Lone Peak in Big Sky, Montana while clouds take on the color of a new day. I spent several days in both December and January 2020 trying to get the "perfect" shot of this iconic ski mountain at sunrise. It was interesting to see how similar certain parts of the mountain felt and also how very different depending on the amount of cloud cover, level of light, and air temperature. I'm always amazed how quickly any sunrise or sunset changes, more often than not wishing I'd taken my photo a few seconds earlier or later.
I shot this image as a 4-panel panorama, using Nikon's superb 500mm telephoto for tack-sharp focus. By climbing up into the Porcupine Creek drainage on the east side of the Gallatin River, I had a good view across the valley and was able to show more of Lone Peak than if I'd been much closer.
