Honeymooning in Yellowstone

The bison rut at the end of Yellowstone's summer provides a unique opportunity to see close-up interactions between bulls and cows. As herds gather in Lamar Valley to sort out breeding rights for the largest bulls, it's a scene of thundering hooves, bellowing calls, and clashes between animals weighing the better part of a ton. But sometimes, rather than fight for a harem, a bull will saunter off with a single cow, trailing her until she's ready to breed.

Here, along Soda Butte Creek, a pair of bison pose during an afternoon of broken clouds. I shot this straight in camera as a black and white, struck by the contrast of lights and darks. It's a large photo measure 48x54 designed to fill a big space. It's offered as an archival-quality paper print and also on ready-hang-aluminum. It's limited to 11 copies and ships free to all lower 48 states.
