The sun sets in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah while the sky tries to muster a few drops of rain. Smoke from wildfires in Arizona contributed to this colorful day's end, drifting along the horizon in veils of grey.

I love the Southwest desert and its unforgiving nature. It's a land of dust and rock with a surprising amount of life, all adapted to live where rain is a rarity. While setting up for this shoot, I listened to a coyote barking hello to the night, watched a pair of small lizards soak the last of the heat from a sand rock, and marveled at how Utah junipers can survive in such a harsh climate.
