December sunset on the Yellowstone River in Montana close to the shortest day of the year.
The river was full of slush ice when I captured this 30-second exposure, allowing time to smooth the surface and show the true beauty of the sky's reflection while really showing the flow of water coming around this large bend. Moments later, as the sun fell lower behind a curtain of leaden clouds on the horizon, the entire scene faded to hues of pale blue and grey, but for a few seconds, at the end of a cold day, I felt as though this incredible vista was a promise from the seasons that winter won't last forever.
