I rarely convert a color photograph to black and white. If the scene is one that I want to render in monochrome, I'll shoot it that way straight in camera. This image of the winter full moon setting behind Lone Peak in Big Sky is an exception. I can't decide which version - color or monochrome - that I like better, and I've decided to offer both.
I captured this image from the top of Levinsky Ridge some 12 miles east of Lone Peak. For the color version, I shot a straight panorama at 500mm medium format. For this image, I captured the moon panel of the panorama at 1/100th of a second, then slowed the shutter for the remaining 5 panels. I wanted to give a sense of night's farewell - flowing clouds lifting into day. The result is a dreamy view of this iconic ski mountain on the brink of day. The low clouds in the foreground follow the route of the Gallatin River far below.
