Like the mast of some ancient ship, this sandstone formation rises from the Terry Badlands in Eastern Montana while the March Milky Way arcs overhead. Earlier in the day, while I was scouting this location, I found perfectly preserved shells, glistening with mother of pearl, from the Miocene at the base of this rock. For millions of years our galaxy has graced the spring sky here, and I felt privileged to witness it on this night.
